To see, DRAW every day.
Beginning work life as a Construction Supervisor renovating Tiffany & Co's Fifth Avenue flagship store, I learned the messy, practical way to get things done: by knowing how to speak to contractors! It helped that the job required expert craftsmanship, maniacal scheduling, and the diplomatic expertise to satisfy cost-conscious corporate chieftains, gruff security personnel, and unhappily punctual floor managers.
With that formative experience, and coming from the process-oriented education I received at avant garde grad schoolSCI-Arc, during its golden years in Santa Monica, I learned that design starts by asking questions, not imagining answers:
from clients, their needs & wants;
from contractors, their means & methods;
from building sites, their limits & opportunities;
from materials of construction, their strengths & economies.
Armed with these methods, all work is design and any design work can be addressed - from furniture & interiors to ground-up buildings, and from illustration to graphic design.
Drawing is a process of asking the hand to follow what your eye sees. If you succeed at that, you can dispose of the finished drawing afterward and you'll still retain the having-had-seen.
By drawing, I learned how to see.
By design, I learned to how to do.
